A CAT Heavy Duty mud flap pre drilled with screws before it is installed on a 2021 Ford Bronco.

My 2021 Ford Bronco needs mud flaps

Posted on February 23, 2022

Why I need mud flaps

I need mud flaps so I am not throwing mud all over the place. While driving I discovered that my tires will throw mud up the driver side door. If a rock gets in my tires. The rock could be thrown at the driver side window and crack it. I’m not being too paranoid,  My windshield did get cracked by something one day. And I had it replaced with insurance. Thanks State Farm.

Also I plan on getting electric running boards that cost $1600 and I want to protect them.

Plus I have seen many videos of people being behind a truck with no mud flaps getting their entire windshield covered in mud. I don’t want to be that guy that causes problems for people behind me.

What mud flaps did I get?

I got the Mud Flaps Pro from CAT. They were a little shy of $100 but I just bit the bullet and brought them. Their dimensions are 19x11x.5 inches  Each mud flap has a reflector at the bottom.  Plus they beat the official ford ones that say Bronco on them for $400+ for the front or rear.

I got 4 mud flaps, 2 in the front and 2 in the rear.

The boxes the Cat mud flaps pro came in.

How did I install my mud flaps?

The mud flaps came in two boxes with 2 mud flaps in each box. The boxes were exactly the same and didn’t say front or rear on them. Thus I decided to make the first box I touched the rear mud flaps. I started by removing the things in the first box.

The box had 2 mud flaps, 8 screws, and 8 washers.  The screws were 5/16 hex size. After that I separated the items to keep them organized.  Then I went over to the Bronco and removed the fender flares from the rear.

Followed by grabbing the mud flaps and deciding where I wanted to put them. I found quadrilateral shaped plastic pieces on both sides that were under the fender fares. They both were screwed in with 3 screws. I removed them and tried to use them for a guide for the mud flaps but that did not work. The guide was 3 screws in a vertical line but I needed to make a triangle with the screws to keep the mud flaps attached to the Bronco securely.

What I did was use a drill bit that was smaller than the screws and pre-drilled 3 holes in the mud flaps. Then I put the washers on the screws and used my electric ratchet wrench and a 5/16 socket to get the screws in the mud flaps. But did not go all the way through until I placed them on the Bronco in the right spots. Then I went through with the Electric Ratchet Wrench and got the mud flaps connected through the plastic of the Bronco on both sides.

After that I gave them a good tug to make sure they were on good. And put the rear fender fares back on. I measured how far they were off the ground and discovered  the rear left was 11 inches and the rear right was 10 inches off the ground. I was just eyeballing it when I was figuring out where to put the mud flaps. Being off by an inch is not really noticeable.  I didn’t install the front mud flaps until a week later. To make sure that the rear ones were not going to fall off first before continuing.

One week later and the rear mud flaps did not fall off so I went on ahead with installing the front mud flaps. I did the same process as the rear mud flaps by removing the front fender fares first. There were no quadrilateral shaped plastic pieces this time. So I moved on to figuring out where I wanted to place the mud flaps. Next I pre drilled 3 holes followed by putting in the 3 screws with the washers in a triangle formation. For both front mud flaps and I was done. Once again I measured how far they were off the ground and both were 9 inches off the ground.

What other mud flaps did I look at?

Husky Liners

They look similar to the CAT ones but they are 4 inches longer and 1 inch wider.

Also they look a bit bland to me. I understand they are meant to just get the job done but how they look does play a factor to me.

They were going to be the ones that I was going to buy. They are the official ford mud flaps.  But on the website it says they are made out of “ Heavy-duty black plastic “ and “Not compatible with side steps, rock rails, or any appearance package. For use with standard size fender flares.” Those are big deal breakers for me. I prefer rubber mud flaps over plastic mud flaps. Also them not being compatible with side steps or rock rails concerns me. Plus I have the Sasquatch packages  on my Bronco and have the bigger fender flares so they won’t fit anyway.  So I rethought my decision and went on to amazon for 3rd party opinions.

Now these are part of the ridiculous priced mud flaps that Ford is selling for $449 for a pair of mud flaps. Ok the price is the biggest factor for me. $449 for just 2 mud flaps is a crime. It would cost just under $900 for 4 mud flaps. That is way over what any mud flaps should cost. At that price point they better be bulletproof. Although I do understand that the Bronco text logo is copyrighted or trademarked and the branding cost money. I do not understand why mud flaps with the words “Bronco” should cost so much money. Also the fact that there are 2 different versions made for rock rails and without rock rails is weird when only the front mud flaps would be affected by a rock rails. Plus neither version works with step bars. One more thing, the website did not give me any height, width, or thickness measurements. So I can’t compare them with the Cat or Husky Liners mud flaps. These were a huge pass from me.

I am going to copy this for the Bucking Bronco logo mud flaps that cost $449 for a pair as well because I feel the same way about those.
